Following your escape from the trolls and raiding of their stash, where you, Gandalf, and Thorin each claimed swords with some bling bling, Gandalf decides it would be best to make for the valley of Rivendell, where Elrond may be able to shed some light on Thror's map (more on that in "The Hobbit #10 - The Secret Door").
There the company can get some much needed R&R, and Bombur can finally go pee like he's been asking to do ever since you guys left the troll's cave.
While relieving himself, Bombur came across a cache of sorts that may help you on your quest. You should probably go check it out.
For those of you who know what this container is, don't worry, it's never been used for that purpose...NOTE: CONTAINER NOW A MICRO--IVY CLEARED AWAY FROM SIDE OF WALL
