This is the 7th cache in a combined series of ‘Animals from this region’ and ‘History of Barberton’. These caches are to be found along the scenic drive from Saddleback Pass (R40) along the Shiyalongubo Pass to Louieville (R38). A four wheel drive vehicle is preferable after heavy rains.
Due to the extensive farming in the Low’s Creek valley, a lot of water was required. During the drought of the 1930’s, the Low’s Creek stopped flowing. This lead to the first dam in the lowveld being designed and constructed. The site chosen was the confluence of the Shiyalongubo and Ugutugulo Creeks, 9km south of Low’s Creek and 13km east of Barberton. The dam, the canal and tunnel to the farmlands were completed in 1939, and the opening was scheduled for 7 April 1940. Colonel Deneys Reitz (1881– 1944), MP for Barberton was present to officiate the opening.
Before the formalities could commence, a parked vehicle had a brake failure and ran into the crowd, killing the Town Clerk of Barberton, C G Hurd, and seriously injuring Fred Wiggins , a bystander (who died the following day in Barberton Hospital), as well the mayor’s wife and several others. The dam was never officially opened.
