Geocache Description:

This is the first cache placed by the Boy Scout Troop 240 and its sponsor Bethany Christian Church. This was created while our troop was working on the Geocaching Merit Badge. We hope you enjoy the cache and remember to CITO.

Troop 240 currently has 35 registered scouts and 18 active, registered leaders.  Our troop is firmly committed to a "Scout to First Class in one year" program, with the goal of providing every scout the opportunity to obtain the rank of Eagle.  In addition to weekly meetings and monthly outings, our troop holds quarterly Courts of Honor, and PLC annual program planning workshops.  We supplement our program with active participation in the Order of the Arrow honor camper's society, Firecrafter for camp ranks, and Whitestag for leadership development. Our troop relies upon youth leadership, the patrol method, and dedicated volunteers.

Our sponsor Bethany Christian Church was organized September 25, 1898 by W.M. Harkins, pastor of Central Christian Church in Anderson, Indiana. The original building was erected in 1871 on the Forkner farm by a Methodist congregation known as Asbury Chapel. The building was purchased by the Christian congregation September 25, 1898.

The congregation met for sixty-five years in the white frame building. During those years the building underwent several remodelings to accommodate a growing congregation. The church soon outgrew the building and a decision was made to relocate on ground given to the church by Mrs. Madge Johns and her daughter, Cecil Johns. This property is the home of our current facility on the corner of Cross Street and Rangeline Road.

The first facility on the present site was completed in December 1963. An educational building was added in September 1970. The activities building housing a gymnasium, kitchen, Friendship Room, and attic was dedicated in September 1980. In August 2001 our facility expanded again with the addition of a new Worship Center and supporting classrooms.
