Geocache Description:

A cache located a short distance from the bridge itself. You do not need to go onto the bridge nor anywhere near the water to claim this cache. Parking available at indicated waypoint.

A medieval road bridge of two spans, Salters' Bridge dates back to the 13th century, and crosses the Ouse Burn near to Killingworth Road. It was so called because it stood on the old salters’ peth which ran from Hartley salt pans to Blanchland. The route through Gosforth was known as Salters' Lane ‑ part of which became what is now Salters Road.

The bridge, originally seven feet wide, has been widened over the years and has undergone alterations at least 4 times, though the dates of these are unclear. However, it still retains much of its original stonework.

I believe this is the oldest working (i.e. actually carrying traffic) bridge in Newcastle but am happy to be proved wrong by any local historians
