Geocache Description:

***CACHE DESCRIPTION UNDATE*** I think this update is long overdue and I would like to apologize to all the cachers who have been frustrated with misleading coordinates. The coordination listed above are the new coords as of 3/3/06*** There is a lone palm tree along the coast that marks a fresh water pond 40 feet from the ocean.

Start from Anaeho'omalu public beach access parking lot. Follow the coastline south. There are ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs dating back to the early 1800's found at these coordinates: N19 54.530, W155 53.932. The petroglyphs are rock drawings created on the pahoehoe lava flow. You can see konane boards called papamu, old sailing ships (probably from the first ships seen in Hawai'i). Near the petroglyphs at these coordinates is a light green sand beach: N19 54.507 W155 53.951. As you walk along the trail made of lava and beach stones look for olivine crystals, a semi-precious stone, found in the rocks in and on the trail.

When you find the pond, it is a great place to cool off, the water being crystal clear and up to depths of twenty feet. it is recommended that you hike with good shoes, but be sure to bring water shoes to wear in the pond, also due to the heat, a bottle of drinking water is a good idea. The cache contains: a Hawaiian music cd, a harmonica, soap, travel bug (Kka'apuni mu number 1), a fish globe, Hawaiian perfume, log book, pencil and sharpener.
