This hide is near the former location of the UW’s Showboat Theatre and also at a small beach looking out over Portage Bay.
The University of Washington’s Showboat Theatre was built in 1938 out on the water in front of this park. Constructed out of wood on permanent pilings, the 220-seat faux Mississippi steamboat was built under the leadership of Professor Glenn Hughes with assistance from the federal Works Progress Administration. The Showboat served as a principal teaching theatre for the School of Drama on Portage Bay for 45 years, featuring a revolving stage and an intimate setting between the actors and the audience. Unfortunately, the Showboat was demolished in 1994 after its fragile condition made it unsafe for continued use.
