Hillary Trail - Wainamu

The Hillary Trail connects a network of existing regional park tracks and basic backpacker campgrounds. It takes trampers through the Waitakere Ranges, past the Arataki Visitor Centre, Huia, Whatipu, Karekare, Piha, Anawhata, and either winding north to Muriwai via the Department of Conservation's Te Henga Walkway, or through Cascade Kauri Park and onto Swanson. Trampers can also choose a public transport option, beginning their journey at Titirangi and connecting with the train at Swanson.

The Trail epitomises the sense of adventure and personal achievement that Ed Hillary himself championed and was renowned for. It is not a walk in the park - but a chance for well-prepared trampers to experience the diverse, and often challenging west coast.

Check out this video about the Hillary Trail, produced by students from AUT for the Auckland Council.

If travelling north along the Hillary Trail, you'll pass this cache on your left just before reaching the intersection of Houghton Track and Lake Wainamu Track, where you'll turn right. Continuing along this track will take you around Lake Wainamu to the dunes, down the stream to Bethells Rd from where you can continue along the Te Henga Walkway to Muriwai.

If travelling south along the Hillary Trail, you'll arrive at the intersection of Lake Wainamu Track and Houghton Track and then turn left and head up the hill. Shortly you'll pass the cache on your right and then you'll continue up the hill and onwards south passing Anawhata and then Piha.

This cache is a white 2L bucket containing logbook, pencil and some swaps. At time of placement it also contained a couple of trackables for the first finder(s) to move along. Please make sure the bucket lid is properly sealed when you're finished! The cache shouldn't be difficult to find, but it is covered with a natural item - please ensure you cover it again when you rehide it.
