Geocache Description:

The Ellsemere Canal

The Ellsemere Canal was intended to link the Mersey, Dee and Severn rivers.  a section was built to link the Mersey at modern day Ellsemere port to  the Dee at Chester. However, whilst work  was begun on the central section which is now known as the Llangollen Canal. The project ran out of money and the only sections to be built were between the Mersey and the Dee and a the middle section from Trevor.

Through the gate you can see the remains of the only part of the canal to be built between Chester and Trevor. This was built  first to carry water from  lake at Moss Valley to the canal as it passed through Wrexham. But, as the canal would never reach this point the work was abandoned.
