Geocache Description:

This is the first in a series of 5 caches placed around the Petal area discussing the early history of the area.  We really hope you enjoy learning about our friendly city.

Inside the first 4 caches you will see two letters on brightly colored yellow labels, you should either write down the two letters or take a picture of them for future reference.   you MUST have them before you can log the 5th and final cache in the series.

You will be looking for a camoed lock and lock box that is well hidden, please rehide as well as or better then you found so the next cacher can enjoy the hunt also.

The very earliest of histories concerning Petal dates back to the Indians who inhabited this section of Mississippi.  No one knows exactly where the first Indians migrated from or how long the early tribes made their home in the Petal area.  But it is evident that the Indians found Fertile soil and ample hunting due to the numerous artifacts that are still being discovered in and around Petal.
As is the nature of most tribes, the Indian does not establish any set boundries for the different tribes, so it is difficult to determine exactly which tribes settled in our area.  One known tribe to make their home in this section was the Choctaw Indian.  Very few white people traveled through the Petal area, and those that did were mainly farmers and trappers transporting their produce and animal skins to the already established Mobile, Alabama trade center.  According to historical documents, the Choctaws were not a savage band of Indians, and they lived in a self-contained culture of their very own.  It was the traveling trapper who first introduced trading as a means of obtaining needed goods.  While the white man introduced unknown concepts to the Indians, he also learned many significant things from them, such as the proper way to build a canoe from a tree trunk, since the rivers were perfect systems of transportation.

congrats to Born2Bcute for the FTF!!!
