Geocache Description:

This is the fourth in a series of 5 caches placed around the Petal area discussing the early history of the area. We really hope you enjoy learning about our friendly city.

Inside the first 4 caches you will see two letters on brightly colored yellow labels, you should either write down the two letters or take a picture of them for future reference. you MUST have them before you can log the 5th and final cache in the series.

PLEASE NOTE, THE CACHE IS NOT AT THE POSTED COORDINATES.  The listed coordinates will take you to the grave of Christoper Chappell.   Christoper is believed to be one of the earliest settlers of Petal, it is said that he came to our area in 1819 from North Carolina, it is assumed that Petal agreed with the Chappells since 14 children were born to he and his wife and all raised to maturity.   A trip through Chappell Cemetery lends much to the search for the names of the early settlers who came to make their homes in Petal.  The cemetery, established in 1820, reveals that as a result of marriage of the six Chappell girls comes the names of Grantham, Burkett, Travis, Mott, Bennett and Wheeler.  Many of the descendants of these early families are now prominent citizens of Petal.  Three of the Chappell sons never married.

Aquilla, the youngest Chappell son, owned approximately 1,100 acres of land along the Leeville Road.  He set aside the land for the cemetery were descendants of the Chappell family continue to bury their loved ones.  A look at the dates on the grave markers reveal that the pioneer people died at young ages, probably due to the lack of proper medical care in treating typhiod, yellow fever, diptheria, and pneumonia.

in order to locate the actual cache you will need to go to the listed coordinates and locate the grave for Christoper Chappell.
