Geocache Description:

THE CACHE IS NOT LOCATED AT THE POSTED COORDINATES! This is a two stage cache with a field puzzle.
This Geocache is not for everyone. It is one of Josh's series of technical caches which can only be located using some technology to obtain the coordinates of the final stage. It is intended for the few that really enjoy the challenge. They will have fun and also learn something new along the way.

Stubblefield
Nathan B. Stubblefield (November 22, 1860 - March 28, 1928) was an American inventor and Kentucky melon farmer. It has been claimed that Stubblefield invented the radio before either Nikola Tesla or Guglielmo Marconi, but his devices seem to have worked by audio frequency induction or, later, audio frequency earth conduction (creating disturbances in the near-field region) rather than by radio frequency radiation for radio transmission telecommunications.
From a Scientific American article published May 24, 1902:
"The latest and one of the most interesting systems of wireless communication with which experiments have recently been conducted is the invention of Nathan Stubblefield, of Murray, Ky., an electrical engineer who is the patentee of a number of devices both in this country and abroad. The Stubblefield system differs from that originated by Marconi in that utilization is made of the electrical currents of the earth instead of the ethereal waves employed by the Italian inventor, and which, by the way, it is now claimed, are less powerful and more susceptible to derangement by electrical disturbances than the currents found in the earth and water."
This cache employs a solid state version of Stubblefield's transmitter sending signal currents through the ground which will be beeping out the last three digits of the Latitude and Longitude of the final stage of the cache. (Ten beeps = the digit Zero). The geocacher interested in finding this cache can build a simple receiver for these signals using instructions shown HERE.

After constructing and testing your Ground Radio receiver proceed to the location indicated in the Waypoint table for FIRST STAGE REFERENCE. Push the probes into the ground about 1 foot apart on the North edge of the trail and turn on the radio. Please do not leave the trail at stage 1 There will be two sets of three beeps followed by a 30 second pause. Add the first three digits to the Latitude of the coordinates posted for this Geocache at the top of the page. Add the second set of digits to the Longitude. The final stage is in a 7 x 4.5 x 2.5 inch Lock&Lock box.

This cache is located within Lake Erie Metropark, a part of the Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Authority park system. A Metropark Vehicle Entry Permit is required: Annual Permit $35. Senior (62+) Permit $20. Daily Permit $7.

For General information please call 810-227-2752 or 800-47-PARKS. Or visit our website at WWW.metroparks.com.

All park rules and regulations apply. Park in parking lots only. Check the Metroparks website for park hours.

In addition to the park being closed at night, by design, the transmitter will be off at night to help extend the life if its batteries.
