This cache is on Pinal Mountain (7,848') outside of Globe. Turn right (Russell Rd) off of Hwy 60 at the intersection where a left turn would take you to Roosevelt Lake. Look for Mt Pinal Recreation Area signs. It is 16.5 miles and about 45 minutes up to the campground on the mountain, the cache is another couple of miles beyond the campground.
The road is unpaved (of course), in good condition, and does not require a high clearance vehicle, but it is narrow in places and oncoming traffic can be a surprise. At 6.31 miles from Hwy 60 the road junctions with Forestry Road 651 which goes up the mountain.
The cache is not actually on Pinal Peak but the peak a couple hundred feet to the south above the Squaw Spring Trailhead. Both peaks have micro-wave towers on them. This cache is an ammo box in the rocks with assorted goodies including a hitch-hiker from Detroit, MI. This has been a favorite place of ours for years. An escape from the heat in the summer, there are hiking trails, a campground and picnic area. From the cache you can see the Superstitions and Weaver's Needle, Florence, the Catalinas and at night the stars are so close.
For those that prefer to hike up mountains, you can hike up using the Sixshooter Canyon, Ice House Canyon or Kellner canyon Trails. Today there were numerous patches of snow still remaining on the mountain. We had a lot of fun placing this cache. We hope all of you who visit Mt Pinal enjoy it as much as we do.
