Have you ever wondered when the 12 days of Christmas actually start and end? I have! Here is the story. The Twelve Days of Christmas are the festive days beginning Christmas Day (25 December). This period is also known as Christmastide and Twelvetide. The Twelfth Night of Christmas is always on the evening of 5 January.

Did you know it is bad luck to light your Christmas decorations before December 1st? It is also customary to leave decorations up until the 5th day of Christmas and to turn them off and take them down after this day. The Christmas wreath is not supposed to be hung until Christmas day and then eaten on the twelfth day. So you say it is after Thanksgiving that you light your Christmas decorations? Christmas is a world wide celebration of Jesus by Christians. No where else in the world do they have OUR Thanksgiving. Canadians would then start at the beginning of November. There are many more misconceptions but the traditional and customary understanding is that Christmas season starts December 1st and ends January 6th. With the actual celebration of Christmas running from December 25th until January 5th.

TRIVIA QUESTION: When are gifts traditionally given worldwide?
***
Day 12, 5 January: The feast of saint Simon Stylites, the modern church recognizes this as the feast day of St. John Neumann.
