Geocache Description:

We placed this cache to celebrate our survival of the “Apocalypse” on 12/21/12. This site was chosen because of its significance to the winter solstice.

The real Stonehenge was built from 3000 BC to 2000 BC in England near the town of Amesbury. The exact purpose of Stonehenge remains shrouded in mystery because the people that built it left no written records. While the orientation of the stones relating to astronomical events is still up for debate, it does create a breathtaking view on the winter solstice. Thousands of people flock to this site to witness the event.

The winter solstice occurs on the shortest day and longest night of the year, and is often referred to as the first day of winter. In 2012 the winter solstice occurred on 12/21/12 which also correlated to the end of the Mayan Long Count calendar. This was the basis for the popular belief that the world would end on that day. Lucky for us, it was just the start of the next B’ak’tun, which is 20 Katun cycles, equal to 144,000 days. The Mayans never thought the world would end in 2012. In fact, their calendar has a long count unit called an Alautun which is about 63,081,429 years!

Sorry conspiracy theorists!
