Caliso Bay is a secluded, largely ignored, bay located between Ferrypoint and Whiting Bay.
The beach is usually shingle, but at the moment it is beautiful and sandy. The daily changing landscape of beach terrain, caused by rough weather, is well illustrated here. Incidentally, the golden beach generally available at Youghal's Front Strand at the other side of Youghal Bay has recently been replaced by tonnes of gravel.
There is little protection from the Atlantic here, and this is an uncompromising and wild landscape.
While unknown to the typical tourist, this beach is a favourite spot for sea anglers and birdwatchers. During the mackerel season, every budding fisherman in the parish goes home with his bag well full.
