Three valleys connected by "La Ruta del Vino" extend 10 to 20 km north of Ensenada (Baja California): San Antonio de las Minas, El Porvenir and El Valle de Guadalupe. These valleys compose one of the best Mexican regions for viniculture. The climate is hot and dry in the summer, whilst moderate cool and humid in the winter. Water is scarce and the vines rely on the few rainfalls between December and March and on well water else. Few rivers flowing mostly subterraneously feed the wells. The climate is semi-arid or also termed arid-mediterranean due to the winter rainfalls. It stands to reason that, the harsh climate is reflected in its wines being mostly red with a few whites. The grapes are in general rich in tannin and sugar, rendering full bodied wines of high complexity, impressive deep color and distinctive legs after swirling the glass.
San Antonio de las Minas is the nearest valley to Ensenada homing several vineyards and winemakers - from large to small producing both commercial and artisanal wines. Just to name a few: Tres Valles, Nativo, Vinisterra, Liceaga, Casa de Piedra, Velasco, Bodegas de Santo Tomás, and Casa Colorada. The varietals range from Cabernet Souvignon, Merlot, Tempranillo, Petit Syrah, to the Misión grape introduced very early by Spanish missionaries.
Enjoy the view over the valley and take the opportunity to visit a local winery to taste the regional wines.
