Another cache dedicated to my alma mata, Cardinal Cushing Academy, which closed its doors in 1972.
Cardinal Cushing Academy had a very "rough" ski slope behind the soccer field, but in 1970 they decided to ride the avalanche of the skiing boom and open the slope to the public. The school widened the slope, put in primitive lights and used the side building, on the left as one enters the back parking lot, as a "lodge." The new ski slope was named "Big Red" after the school mascot, The Cardinal. It had a few years of relative success but the poor winter of '71 - '72 doomed the investment. Other issues forced the school to close its doors that June.
I was not a skier but did spend a few hours on the slope picking rocks. It was common to have "collective punishment" back then and if one of the guys pulled a boneheaded stunt, we all paid for it. The punishment of choice was to go out to the ski slope and pick rocks. It was quite a sight to see a bunch of boys in dress shoes, suit coat and tie bent over on the slope covered in mud. I also spent time on the ski slope as a member of the soccer team. As an underclassman I often had to "run the lines" and chased many soccer balls down the hill - fond memories!
I actually placed a cache on the ski slope last spring but didn't like the container and never got back to replace it. In the meantime, a new cache was placed very near my container so I moved this cache upslope a bit.
Park at Mill Pond parking and cross Rte. 113 to the old cow field. Head diagonally across the old cow field to the rear of the softball field to the old ski slope. Please do not approach the school when in session. You also could head in the blue trail to the base of the old slope and follow it up to the cache, but it is very bushy.
Look for a pill bottle.
