Geocache Description:

This cache marks the exact spot of the Brisbane 2011 Floodline.

In January 2011, Brisbane waited in anticipation for the dreaded flow on effects of the flash floods which hit Toowoomba a few days earlier.  We live close to the river bank in New Farm and waited and watched and eventually evacuated after raising all our belongings onto milk crates.  Our friends, family and even a teacher of our little boy all offered help with packing, sourcing crates and giving us somewhere to stay.

Where you stand is exactly where the flood waters peaked here in Merthyr Park on the 14th January.  There was a snail trail of debris in a line at this level along the length of the park.   The table in front of you was completely covered in water and mud.  And old jetty to the left was completed carried away - you can see what remains is an old post.  Mum and kids stayed with friends while hubby stayed behind to 'man the fort' as he watched stray fridges, the river walkway and boats on pontoons fly by with neighbours who shared a drink.

When the waters receded, mud covered the entire ground right up to the floodline.  The pathway had mud about 30cm deep and a mud army came out in droves with spades, buckets, brushes and gumboots.  We learnt the true spirit of community as everyone rallied around to help.

January 2011 is something we will always remember that is for sure.  When you look around now, there is little evidence of the flood. The picnic table mentioned is located in a beautiful spot - only 5m from the rivers edge. Bring along a picnic lunch or a flask of tea. You could also catch a ferry as part of your adventure as a terminal is only about 500m away.  Enjoy hunting for this cache.
