Geocache Description:

Background
I stumbled upon this piece of goldfields history quite by accident. I was buying a marine chart in a map shop and stumbled across a photocopied publication about the Blackwood and Trentham area goldfields. In it there were a number of quotes from Herbert Cann who mined the area with a number of mines over a long period of time.

In one of his recounts he made reference to an explosives magazine and put a rough location on a map. Now I was intrigued by this as I knew the area pretty well but had never heard of this magazine so was intrigued to see if it still existed. I headed for the marked location and quickly located the track and a subsequent fork in the track which was also shown but couldn't see the marked magazine anywhere. Anyway I climbed a little hillock to get a better view and, sure enough, I was standing on the armouring dirt wall for the magazine with the magazine right next to me but absolutely buried in blackberries.

I went back a second time with some pruning tools and have hacked my way into the explosives magazine so that you can now enter it. It's nothing too exciting but it's a little bit of history that was almost lost to the forest.

I'm not sure what the history of the magazine is but it looks like it was used right up until the 1960s or 70s as the door locks have the old six digit phone numbers on them but the magazine would predate these. I will try and determine a bit more of the history of the magazine and if anyone has any information on it I would be interested to hear it.

Locating the cache and magazine

Locate the cache by driving down the track - the track is fine for 2WDs and you can park just adjacent to the GZ. Can you see the magazine? It's not far away but I bet you can't see it. Head east a little further down the track and you will see the entrance on the right. Cache is a small Sistema container.
