Geocache Description:

Lake Mountain Boundary hut

Lake Mountain is known mainly as the closest decent snow to Melbourne with thousands of people tobogganing or skiing in winter. In summer the mountain is usually deserted with occasional bike riders and walkers coming up from Marysville for a day trip and rarely venturing further than the carpark. For those who take the time to walk up to Echo flat they will be rewarded with fabulous views, wild flowers and the occasional wombat out for a dawdle. There are over 30 km of walking trails to meander along. This geocache is not for the faint hearted - the walk is about 8 km return. It can be skied to in winter if the coverage is good. Do not attempt this cache in poor weather and if you are not properly equipped. There is limited water along the track in places and phone coverage is fair in places with Telstra. There are no patrols or guides to help you out in the green season. Do not attempt to do this cache without careful planning and preparation. Do not go to Lake Mountain on severe, extreme or total fire ban days. In winter allow for blizzards and whiteouts. Any time you attempt this cache you will need to carry appropriate alpine clothing, food and water. ***Leave an intentions note on your car window. Despite of all of these warnings it is not a hard slog, the terrain is only mildly hilly and the views rewarding. An entry fee to the alpine park is collected durng the Snow Season only. I would suggest that you google Lake Mountain to find the latest weather details and winter entry fees. Update March 2017- Cache is still there- I camped at the hut overnight ( in a tent) and noted how much the Snow gums have grown since my last visit. The walk out from the carpark takes about 1.5 hours with a 20 kg pack so most will be able to do it in an hour unless you try for a couple of my other caches on the plateau. Ants are still a bit angry near the hut..
