This is our first geocache. One of us grew up in Ashland, with happy memories of watching trains pass by, counting the cars on the freight trains, and hearing the comforting sound of the train whistle at the edge of town at night. Now, we come back to Ashland every year for Christmas to visit. On an early trip to Ashland, we passed the time on a snowy day by finding a geocache that was in the park across the street (which is no longer there). There are a couple of geocaches elsewhere in "downtown" Ashland -- the center of the Center of the Universe -- but none that really pay homage to the focal point of the town's history: the railroad. Of course, we can't put a geocache on the tracks (even if we sometimes put pennies on the tracks). But we've put it within view of the railroad, and next to the Ashland Museum, if you're interested in learning a bit more about the town's history -- both railroad-related and otherwise.
