This is #46 in my Abandoned Railroads Series. Most of them are 'park and grabs' intended to show you where the railroad ran and teach you a little about it.
Chartered in 1876 as the Covington, Flemingsburg & Pound Gap Railway, this railroad was planned as a 110-mile narrow-gauge from Covington to Hazel Green in Wolfe County. The first segment to open was from Johnsons, later named Flemingsburg Junction, to Flemingsburg in the spring of 1877. The line was later extended to Hillsboro, but that's as far as it ever went. In 1907, a trestle collapse 2 miles outside of Flemingsburg killed 3 people and the line was cut back to Flemingsburg. In 1909, it was standard-gauged, renamed the Flemingsburg and Northern in 1920 (the last of it's SEVEN names), and operated until 1955 as a 6-mile long shortline.
At the site of this cache was where the railroad crossed this spot long before the road and fill was here. If you look towards Maysville (northwest) you can see a long line of trees in a perfectly straight line with a small grey house on the left. That house sits on Old Convict Road (KY 559) and is very near where the roadbed crosses that road. The railroad ran through those trees. Unfortunately, the only good pull-off was their driveway, so I settled for this spot, but if you want a better view of the roadbed, take the short drive there.
