The Huddersfield Broad Canal was originally known as the Cooper Canal, as it branched off the Calder and Hebble Navigation at Cooper Bridge. It was later known as Sir John Ramsden's Canal, after the Lord of the Manor and main land-owner. It later became known as the Broad Canal to distinguish it from the Narrow Canal.
It was opened in 1776 and is 4 miles long and rises through nine locks to terminate in a Basin in the centre of Huddersfield.
The Huddersfield narrow canal connects into this terminal basin and opened throughout to Ashton in 1811.
2. What is the name of the Basin in the centre of Huddersfield?

The main obstacle for the promoters and builders of the canal was how to cross the high ground between Marsden and Saddleworth. A tunnel was proposed, and took 17 years to build and was opened in 1811. The delay was caused by the difficulty of driving such a tunnel which stretched the engineering knowledge of the time, and also lack of finance and poor supervision.
The tunnel was extended at the Diggle end when the railway tunnels were built to make it even longer.
Standedge tunnel is the longest, highest (above sea level) and deepest (below ground level) canal tunnel in the uk.

8.How long in metres is the tunnel?

H= HXXX metres

When the Manchester to Leeds railway was built, the tunnels followed the same alignment as the canal tunnel and the canal tunnel was used to remove spoil from the railway tunnels excavation. The railway and canal tunnels are linked by adits between them. Now only one railway tunnel is in use by trains though there are plans to reopen one of the disused tunnels as part of the electrification works planned for the railway.

9.In all how many railway and canal tunnels are there at Standedge?

I= Number
