BERMEO
En plena costa vizcaína, en las faldas del monte Sollube y en un terreno fuertemente accidentado, se sitúa uno de los principales puertos pesqueros del territorio histórico: Bermeo, una de las primeras villas fundadas en Bizkaia y que a lo largo de su historia ha vivido y se ha desarrollado alrededor de su puerto.
La pesca ha sido desde siempre el eje de la economía bermeana, sin olvidar la agricultura y el comercio. Durante los siglos XIV y XV la pesca de la ballena era el motor económico de la villa como se evidencia en el escudo de Bermeo.
En el siglo XX, y sobre todo en la década de los 70, la pesca era elemento motor de la economía local con más de 200 embarcaciones, pescando sobre todo anchoa, merluza, besugo, bonito y atún. Este auge pesquero llevó consigo un importante desarrollo de la industria conservera y de la comercialización del pescado. Pero a partir de la reconversión del sector pesquero en los años 90, su flota decreció de una manera considerable aunque la flota que se ha mantenido se caracteriza por ser extraordinariamente moderna y competitiva. En la actualidad sigue siendo una villa arraigada a la tradición marinera ya que su economía se basa mayoritariamente en la pesca y en las conservas de pescado.

Halfway along the coast of Bizkaia (Biscay) on the slopes of the Sollube mountain and in a very uneven area is located one of the Province’s main fishing ports: Bermeo. It was one of the first towns to be established in Bizkaia, and throughout its history has been part of and grown up around its port.
Fishing has always been the centre of Bermeo’s economy, not to mention agriculture and trade. During the 14th and 15th centuries whale hunting was the economic driving force of the town, and this is depicted in its coat of arms.
In the 20th century, and in the 1970s in particular, fishing was the driving force of the local economy with over 200 vessels fishing mainly for anchovy, hake, bream, bonito and tuna. This fishing heyday also led to the significant development of the canning industry and marketing of fish. But following the reconversion of the fishing sector in the 1990s, the fleet was considerably reduced, although the one that has been maintained is characterised as extremely modern and competitive. Today, the town remains firmly rooted in the marine tradition since its economy is mainly based on fishing and preserved fish.
