Geocache Description:

Join Wolfpack01 and zulu113 on Saturday, April 27 at Colorado Mountain Brewery for a fun and exciting puzzle-solving event and an all-around Excellent Caching Adventure!

You are invited to join us for the premier geocaching puzzle event of the year! We have put together a series of puzzles and locations to challenge your searching and solving skills. Cool prizes will be awarded to the winning team and other prizes will be available to win by everyone!

There are two ways to participate:
1: Enjoy solving puzzles in the field?  Form or join a team and participate in the main event.  Post your team details in your ‘Will Attend’ log if you already have a team.  If you don’t have a team, post that you are looking for one in your ‘Will Attend’ log and make some new friends!  Then show up with your team at the event location at 12:30PM.

2: Not into puzzles but want to see what this is all about anyway?  We anticipate all teams will be finished by 5:00PM, so just show up at the event location around that time and join the festivities!

Location:
Colorado Mountain Brewery
1110 Interquest Pkwy
Colorado Springs, CO 80921

Schedule:
12:30PM: Puzzle teams should arrive at this time
12:45PM: Wolfpack01 and zulu113 will go over the rules
1:00PM: Start the Excellent Adventure!

6:00PM: Event finishes, leave or stick around and enjoy good company!

A few notes:
  • The point of this event is to have fun.  If you’re not confident in your puzzle-solving abilities but still want to attend, please do so!  We want attendees to enjoy themselves, not get frustrated, and we are putting these puzzles together in a way that all teams will be able to get assistance on any areas they are stuck on so they may proceed.
  • We expect the Adventure to take around 3-4 hours to complete.
  • There will be a maximum of ten teams.
  • Teams must have at least two but no more than five people in them. Note: multiple people under a single caching account count for each person, not each caching name!
  • Each team must have at least one vehicle, and if multiple vehicles are used the team must agree to stay together at all times.
  • We’ll need a phone number or two to contact each team while they are in the field (and we’ll give you ours for assistance as well).
  • You will need to drive between clues and locations, and the total driving distance is expected to be less than 40 miles.
  • You will not have to purchase anything at any of the locations.
  • Be prepared for a small hike, but no special equipment other than good shoes are required.
  • A smart phone isn’t required (but it certainly won’t hurt).
  • No collusion between teams (the puzzles are altered slightly to keep this from doing any good anyway).
  • You are encouraged to bring food and snacks.
  • Colorado Mountain Brewery is a family-friendly restaurant/brewery with a great kids menu.
A few excerpts from logs for the first Excellent Adventure:
  • Vorticity: “This cache was the Event version of Wyrmholes.”
  • OF-Erad: “This was the BEST EVENT I have EVER been too!”
  • rob14erguy: “This was my best geocaching experience in 8+ years of doing this!”
  • Claudey: “To quote The Incredibles, "That was totally WICKED!!" Best event ever.”
  • Avgirls33: “C&D did an amazing job hosting this excellent adventure and created a wide variety of challenges that kept us intrigued all day”
  • SeekDaCache: “We had a great time even though we didn't participate in the puzzle cache event.”
If you have any questions, post a note here or email Wolfpack01 or zulu113 and we'll respond quickly and update this listing accordingly.  Hope to see you there!

Here's a brief overview of some of the puzzles used the first time to aid those who are new this time. Some puzzles were more successful than others, and none will make a repeat appearance, but they might give an idea of the type of thing you could encounter.

  • A basic grid-based logic puzzle, along the lines of http://www.thelogiczone.plus.com/logic_e_20.htm
  • A numbrix-based puzzle, where cachers used basic logic and math to derive the next coordinates.
  • A field puzzle using a painted PVC tube with a slideable ring, where cachers had to line up the right spot on the tube based on clues we'd given to find the next coordinate numbers.
  • A puzzle where cachers were given the names of stations on the London Underground (we provided a map), and had to count the stations between them to find the next set of coordinates.
  • A field puzzle with a large disk with nails on the outside, greek letters painted next to those nails, and numbers on the inside. Cachers had to use provided rubber bands to connect greek letter pairs which would intersect over numbers on the inside.
  • A stereogram which contained the dewey decimal code of a book containing the next puzzle at the library next door to puzzle location.
  • A lookup puzzle where cachers had to read a page of text and find the numbers within, then use a grid we'd provided to find the next set of numbers.
Some of these were harder than others, and in the case any group was unable to solve one of them we provided hints and then solutions to keep each team moving along.
