The path of history Weenen game reserve Traditional Cache

This cache is temporarily unavailable.

Knagur Green: Greetings

We have received a request to archive your cache page as the physical cache appears to be in need of maintenance and there has been no recent indication that timely maintenance may be forthcoming.

I'm temporarily disabling it, to give you an opportunity to check on the cache, and take whatever action is necessary.

You are responsible for occasional visits to your cache to ensure it is in proper working order, especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.) or posts a Needs Maintenance log. Temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to search for it until you have addressed the problem.

Please enable your cache by selecting 'enable' on the right hand side of the listing , once the cache has been replaced/repaired, or checked that it is still in situ.

The Geocache Maintenance guideline explains a CO's responsibility towards checking and maintaining the cache when problems are reported.

Caches that have been archived for lack of maintenance will not be unarchived. This is explained in the Help Center

If you no longer wish to maintain the cache then the listing should be archived.

Please respond to this situation in a timely manner (i.e., within 30 days) to prevent the cache from being archived for non-responsiveness. If you plan on repairing this cache, but cannot get to it within 30 days, please log a note to the cache page (not email) to let the community know

Thank you for understanding

Geocache Description:

A spot in the reserve where you may get out of the car, but please note this is at your own risk. The reserve is home to many wild animals and amongst them is the Rhino, one of the Africa's big 5. Make sure of the environment before alighting from your vehicle. If animals are seen here it is probably best to carry on down to the Mtunzini picnic spot a few hundred meters down the hill and enjoy a bite to eat.

On your left is a deep valley with some interesting features. The original Voortrekker route into the bushmans river valley (Now Weenen) went through this reserve. The original farm "Onverwacht" was owned by the Coetzee family until 1862 when it was boughtby Andries Pretorius, possibly the famed Voortrekker leader, though this has not been confirmed. In 1888 to Sir Theophilus Shepstone, Then it was owned by the Geekie family from 1892 and used as a labour farm until its expropriation by the Union Government in 1948.

Next to the road on the left is the red leaved rock fig Ficus ingens and near that is the red ivory tree, Berchemia zeyheri. The latter is a decidious tree with a red fruit which is edible and delicious. The bark is eaten by porcupines and the wood has a fine grainand an attractive red colour which makes it most suitable for ornamental worl. Amongst the zulu people only the chiefs may carry sticks made from this wood. It is also considered to have a strong magical effect against evil spirits.
