SGT Leigh Ann Hester is the first woman since WWII to receive the Silver Star.
SGT Hester was assigned to the 617th Military Police Company of the Kentucky Army National Guard and deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom. On March 20, 2005 Hester's squad was shadowing a southbound convoy comprised of both military and civilian transport trucks when Iraqi insurgents ambushed a passing northbound convoy with RPGs, machine guns, and small arms fire. The military trucks were from the Nebraska Army National Guard's 1075th Transportation Company from Columbus and York NE. The ambush stopped the convoy and left many of the lightly armored convoy vehicles vulnerable to insurgent attacks.
SGT Hester's squad came to the aid of the convoy by positioning their HumVees between the convoy and the insurgents and returning fire. This move allowed the military veicles in the convoy to try to reconsolidate and move out of the kill zone. Hester led her team through the kill zone and into a flanking position, where she assaulted a trench line with hand grenades and M203 grenade-launcher rounds. She and SGT Timothy Nein, her squad leader, then cleared two more trenches, at which time she killed three insurgents with her rifle. When the fight was over, 27 insurgents were dead, six were wounded, and one was captured.
SGT Leigh Ann Hester's actions helped eliminate the insurgent ambush and enabled the convoy to escape the kill zone. On June 16, 2005 SGT Leign Ann Hester was awarded the Silver Star for valor.
