Geocache Description:

An excellent hike or mountain bike ride (with 250m of elevation gain) and pays off with a fantastic view of Cowichan Bay from the summit of Mount Tzouhalem.

Mount Tzouhalem is named after a local warrior in the mid 1800's. It is said that when under threat of invasion, he lead a preemptive strike in which they baited the attackers with canoes filled with warriors dressed as women, leading to a bloody ambush that slaughtered all the invaders. Tzouhalem's fighting and behaviour lead to his exile, and he was said to live in caves on the mountain that now bears his name.

These days, the mountain is home to many hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers. The mountain is crisscrossed with a few fire roads and a lot of trails.

This cache is located not far from my favorite place on the whole mountain, on the ridge overlooking Cowichan Bay. The cache is located nowhere near the cliffs, so no need to look over there other than to enjoy the view. After finding the cache, do walk a little further up the hill to the viewpoint.

Cowichan Bay

The simplest instructions for getting near the cache is to climb the fire road from the parking lot for 4.25km, then turn right and go up to the ridge. Look out at Cow Bay and enjoy the view.

There are significantly shorter routes up to here than the fire road however, should you choose to go your own way. Keep an eye out, and listen for bikes on the other trails though.
