Geocache Description:

Unusual Measures is a traditional cache located in Herbert Park. Thematically it is related to units of measurements.

The following information is composed of excerpts of Wikipedia entries. Full links are appended below for further reading.

Ireland inherited the imperial system of measurement from Britain, and these units continued to be used after Irish independence. It is principally due to Irish membership in the European Union (EU) that metric units were introduced. Legally, Ireland has been fully metric since 2005 (albeit with one exception - the pint), but there is also widespread (though decreasing) use of imperial units in everyday conversation.

However, there are also a large number of unusual units of measurements. An unusual unit of measurement is a unit of measurement that does not form part of a coherent system of measurement; especially in that its exact quantity may not be well known or that it may be an inconvenient multiple or fraction of base units in such systems. Such units of length for example include the Parsec and the Siriometer. But it gets even weirder when also taking “made up” units into accounts. Many people have made use of, or invented, units of measurement intended primarily for their humour value. Humorous units of length for example include the Beard-Second and the Sheppey. The beard-second is a unit of length inspired by the light-year, but used for extremely short distances such as those in nuclear physics. The beard-second is defined as the length an average beard grows in one second. The Sheppey is a measure of distance equal to about 7⁄8 of a mile (1.4 km), defined as the closest distance at which sheep remain picturesque.

Further information on unusual and humorous units of measurements can be found here:

The cache is located in Herbert Park. Gates to that part are opened at 10 AM every day and are locked at sunset.

Pay and display parking is available all along Herbert Park as well as in the smaller side streets. Parking is free on weekends.

The cache is unusual and about 3 meters long. However, it cannot hold items. Please bring your own pen to sign the log. It is very difficult to retrieve and replace when muggles are around. Also signing the log will get more and more difficult to do in secrecy the later you come to the party.
