Geocache Description:

We hope that this geocache serves as a tribute to the Fab Four's musical legacy, with a splendid time guaranteed for all. Please be discreet during your search (do not search during stadium events or when security is stationed nearby), and be careful to return the 'cache just as found. BYOP, and take some time to appreciate the art deco designed gates, constructed during the heyday of President Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration.

Congratulations to JennWade for the FTF!!!

It was here, at City Park (now Tad Gormley) stadium on September 16, 1964, that the Beatles played a sold-out show before approximately 12,000 fans, at $5 a ticket. The other acts on the bill were The Bill Black Combo, The Exciters, Clarence 'Frogman' Henry, and Jackie DeShannon.

Upon their arrival in the Crescent City, the group had but one major request: to meet Fats Domino. The musician agreed to a meeting, which occurred immediately prior to the performance. During the afternoon, when Mayor Victor Schiro gave the Beatles a key to the city, proclaiming September the 16th 'Beatles Day' in New Orleans, John Lennon responded: "I want to put my arm around you. You look like a nice fellow, Lord Mayor."

The Beatles' stage was situated at the far side of the venue (visit the waypoint for stage view coordinates), a considerable distance from the audience. During the group's performance of "Can't Buy Me Love", more than 100 fans broke through a police cordon and ran across the field toward the stage. It took 225 police officers more than 20 minutes to restore order, with mounted police patrolling the area of the breach. From the stage, John Lennon remarked: "We'd like to continue with our next number, if you would stop playing football in the middle of the field." Before closing their set with "Long Tall Sally", Paul McCartney concluded by telling the crowd: "We'd like to thank everybody for coming, including the football players."
