I first became familiar with Alvarado Creek 15 years ago when I was assigned to provide irrigation along its banks. Yes, believe it or not, this mess of reeds and weeds was actually planted and watered at one time. The Army Corp of Engineers and various other agencies required that the banks on this section of Alvarado Creek be restored to its native habitat. Temporary irrigation was placed to give the native plantings a head start. Consultants were brought in and biologists were hired to monitor the progress.
While this isn't the most beautiful spot in San Diego, it is none the less, considered a native habitat. Soon the San Diego Trolley will be constructed along this stream bed so expect some changes over the next two years.
