Geocache Description:

Enjoy this cache in a serene location

Another cache on the beautiful Lord Howe Island. As the title suggests it is hidden at Old Settlement beach which is a lovely secluded beach which is fantastic for swimming and snorkelling.

On the rising tide quite often you will find a few curious turtles come to check you out.  It is truly an experience you won't forget to go snorkelling with them.  To the right there is also a sanctury zone covered in beautiful coral with a wide variety of fish to see, which is well worth the swim over.

Lord howe is a small volcanic island about 700km north-east of Sydney. It was first discovered by the Lieutenant Henry Lidgbird Ball on 17th February 1788 aboard the HMS Supply.  For many years after the discovery the island was regulary visited by Government ships sailing from Sydney to Norfolk Is. and by whalers in search of fresh water and food.  It wasn't until 1834 before the first settlers arrived on Old Settlement Beach (hence the name).  The settlers included 3 men with their wives who survived by trading meat and fish with the passing ships. Their houses were built from palm thatch.  It wasn't until 1860's until a substantial house was built by Nathan Thompson from Australian cedar that washed up from the beach which still stands today.
The sale of palm seeds was a major industry of the island to keep the economy going.  In 1932 the SS Morinda started to bringing tourists to the island.  Tourism has increased dramatically and the sale of the palm seeds has only recently been dropped.

Today the limit of 400 tourists at any one time adds to Lord Howe's relaxing nature and makes it the best holiday destination in the world :)

The cache is located in behind a banyan tree and shouldn't be a trouble to find.

[The cache will be maintained by my Nan who lives on the island!]
