Geocache Description:

Canberra was originally planned with two cathedrals, neither of which was built. In typical Canberra style another was eventually proclaimed but only after extensions to an existing church.

WP1 - St Christopher's Cathedral

Commenced in 1938 and completed in 1939, St Christopher's church was the first Roman Catholic church in Canberra. It was only after the 1973 extensions to the church that it was changed to a Cathedral.

Find the plaque marking this occasion.

The cathedral was consecrated on A February 1973.
B = Number of letters in the 1st word of the 2nd line
C = Number of letters in the 2nd word of the 6th line

Calculate WP2 as S35 (2*A+B).(A*B*C)-1, E149 0B.(A*B*C)+A

WP2 - Rottenbury Hill

This is the site allocated for the Anglican Cathedral. It was dedicated on 8th May 1927. A design competition was held and architects selected, but arguments about who was to pay for the cathedral and the onset of the great depression prevented its construction. The church constructed a library on the site in the mid 1950's and various other structures since.

WP2 brings you to the most obvious structure on the site.

D = Number of caged floodlights
E = Number of large round 'plates' in the pond edging.

Calculate WP3 as S35 (A*E+C).(D-E)B1, E149 0C.(A+E)DC

WP3 - Cathedral Hill

This is the site allocated for the Catholic Cathedral. Drawings were produced in 1929 for a massive structure that would have been larger than St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney. It was designed to be 130m long and the tower 73m high. A foundation stone was laid on the 6th of April 1930, but due to problems raising funds and the ongoing depression it was never built. A presbytery was built on the site in 1931 to satisfy a condition of the lease that building commence within two years. This building is still at the site.

In the late 70's plans for a National Shrine were developed, but this also was not built for financial reasons.

At WP3 you will find a light post next to the empty site.

F = Sum of all the digits of the light post number
G = Sign on light post. Number of letters in second word minus number of letters in first word
H = Number of complete rings on one of the nearby gates

Calculate GZ as S35 (E*F+1).(F-G)H(D/2), E149 0C.G(A+H)E

Please cover the cache well (rocks on top) and be aware of motoring muggles.
