Geocache Description:

Placed with the help of a young cacher who attends this establishment.

Due to all the terrible events that our happening in our schools I had to move this three times, each time getting father and farther from the reason for this cache. Thanks to dlbisblest who I enlisted for help, it now rests in a nice safe secure location ready to be enjoyed along with Long Gone, which is the second part of this one. Thanks dlbisblest.

This school is named to honor the once thriving community of Swallows, located 13 miles west of Pueblo. All that remains today of the once vibrant town is the still active cemetery. The people who settled that valley during the 1870's, 1880's and 1890's were hardy farmers, ranchers, railroaders, and quarrymen, who were determined to carve out a living in The West. The community occupied both sides of the Arkansas River. Two railroad lines, one on each side of the river, hauled coal and gold from around the Canon City area. Many harrowing experiences befell the school children who had to cross over the river on a suspension foot bridge to attend classes on the other side. With school, dance hall, and depot always on the 'other side' the bridge was kept busy. At noon on Sunday, June 3, 1921 the crest of the Big Flood struck the community and swept nearly everything away. In 1960 the Bureau of Reclamation purchased the land and its structures were either moved or bulldozed to prepare for the inundation of the Pueblo Reservoir.
