Geocache Description:

This cache is on the top of Hunter Knob on Forest Service land. It requires a fairly steep bushwhack of 0.22 miles from the parking area to the cache. The cache is a 50 cal ammo can.

In the many years we have lived in this area, we have always considered it a challenge to climb hills, knolls, knobs, balds & mountains that we find on topo maps. Hunter Knob is one of these places......why did we originally come here? Because we saw it on a map. But this place rewarded us with a nice view (primarily in winter) and solitude, fairly close to home, and these are some of the reasons we have kept coming back to this area. We were inspired to plant this cache from some of the "old school" caches, particularly "Cache #1, Lake Burton" (GC56A) by the late John Ed Fowler. That cache is simply a bushwhack up a hill with an ammo box at the end. That is what this cache is about, and this cache is dedicated to him.

The Hunter Knob area can be accessed by Bluebird Lane which comes off of Gum Log Rd in western Towns County, GA. Bluebird Lane becomes FS 724. This forest service road can have some small rutted muddy spots, so it is advisable that you take a vehicle that does not have a low clearance. I am able to go in and out of here in my 2WD light duty pick-up truck without much problem, however, when it is really wet, a 4WD might be a bit better to avoid getting stuck in the mud.

Park at the parking coordinates (a wide area in the road about 50 ft or so before the FS gate). From here, just start walking up hill. The cache will be 0.22 mi in a southeasterly direction from the parking area, however it may be easier to go up hill in a easterly direction until you get to the crest of the hill and then gradually go more southerly to the cache. The area is wooded, and doesn't have very thick undergrowth, but it will be a somewhat steep 430 ft elevation climb to the cache, hence the terrain rating. I don't know of any trails to the top of this knob. Since it is a gradual slope up, be careful of slippery leaves, etc. Poison plants, slithery critters, etc., could be in the area, so be careful.

The cache is a 50 cal ammo can that is well-hidden so it isn't accidentally discovered by hunters or big furry critters. Use the hint pic. The cache will be near the base of the prominent landmark in the picture. While you are here, enjoy the solitude and views (mainly in the winter) of the surrounding area. Please rehide the cache just as you found it.

Also, since this is an area frequented by hunters, please wear bright orange during fall and winter during the hunting seasons. After all, it IS called Hunter Knob. In compliance with US Forest Service regulations, this cache is marked as an official geocache with the cache GC# and the CO's e-mail address.

Good luck to y'all! & happy caching!!

Congratulations to two of caching's best.....mxcr & LL100....for being FTF!! After hiking those steep access trails to the Rim Trail, I bet you thought that this terrain was more like a "2" :)
