[ITA] Eleonora Duse è stata definita meritatamente la più grande attrice teatrale italiana di tutti i tempi.
Nata il 3 ottobre 1858 in una stanza d'albergo di Vigevano (Pavia) dove la madre, attrice girovaga, sostò per partorire, Eleonora Duse non frequenta una scuola, ma a quattro anni è già sul palcoscenico: per farla piangere, come richiede la parte, qualcuno dietro le quinte la picchia sulle gambe.
A dodici anni sostituisce la madre ammalata nei ruoli di protagonista; a ventitré anni è già prima attrice, e a ventinove capocomica: è lei a scegliere il repertorio e la troupe, e ad interessarsi della produzione e delle finanze.
Nel 1909, al ritiro dalle scene, si stabilisce ad Asolo. Nel 1916 appare in un film muto, "Cenere", per tornare sulle scene teatrali nel 1921.
Si spegne il 21 aprile 1924 a Pittsburgh, a causa di una polmonite contratta nel corso di una lunghissima tournée negli Stati Uniti. Secondo le sue volontà, viene sepolta nel cimitero di Asolo.
A lei è intitolato l'unico premio italiano destinato, annualmente, all'attrice di teatro che si è distinta particolarmente nel corso della stagione di prosa in uno o più spettacoli in Italia o all’estero.

Born on October 3, 1858, in a hotel room in Vigevano (Pavia) where her mother, a wandering actress, had stopped to give birth toher, Eleonora Duse did not attend school, but at the age of four is already on the stage: to make her cry, as required by the script, someone behind the scenes beats her legs.
When twelve years old, she replaces the sick mother in the role of the protagonist, at age twenty-three she's the first actress, and at the age of twenty-nine she's at head of the company.
In 1909, retiring from the scenes, she settled in Asolo. In 1916 she appeared in a silent movie, "Ashes", and returned on stage in 1921.
She died on April 21, 1924 in Pittsburgh, for a pneumonia contracted during a tournee in the United States. Following her will, she was buried in the Asolo cemetery.
The only Italian female theatre award is named after her. It is awarded annually to the actress standing out in one or more shows in Italy and abroad.
