History of the UNRUH CACHE.

In 1979, A youth group from Enumclaw, Washington was traveling to a Pathfinder Camporee in Tygh Valley.

In the afternoon, the group stopped in The Dalles for some touch football and to eat. They then caravanned to Tygh Valley. There were five young men in one of the vehicles. There was a motor home in front of their vehicle. When the caravan reached Tygh Valley, the driver of the motor home waited for the following vehicle. When the vehicle did not arrive, the motor home retraced the route and came upon a Logging truck at the edge of the road, stopped where it had been flagged down by a young man. While at the scene the local ambulance arrived. The vehicle lay at the bottom of the main canyon next to the road. Of the five young men in the vehicle, two were killed, one seriously injured, and two survived with minor injuries.

This cache is in memory of one of the young men who did not survive.

Since 1979, this grade has been straightened and widened.

However, vehicles still leave the roadway and end up in the canyon. Within the past two years, a vehicle driven by a Tygh Valley resident was found at the bottom of the canyon.

Please, enjoy your trip, but drive carefully.
