The Wetland at Conover City Park
The city of Conover, through a generous grant from the North Carolina Clean Water Management Trust Fund, was able to construct this engineered , constructed storm water wetland. A constructed stormwater wetland serves many purposes such as improving water quality, mitigating flooding, and creating a new ecosystem and habitat for a number of plants, insects and animals. The stream located here in the center of Conover Station Parkis the headwaters of McLin Creek, which flows into Lyle Creek, then into the Catawba River. A watershed of over fifty acres, which includes a portion of downtown Conover, drains into this wetland. The wetland, acting much like a filter, treats the storm water, which carries a variety of pollutants such as sediment, hydrocarbons, nitrogen and phosphorus. The wetland temporally stores runoff in shallow pools that support wetland plants and promotes the growth of microbial populations which can extract soluble carbon and nutrients.
