1978 – The Great Blizzard of 1978, a rare severe blizzard with the lowest non-tropical atmospheric pressure ever recorded in the US (until October 2010); 36 inches in South Bend and classes cancelled at Notre Dame for the first time.
1988 – The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical “Phantom of the Opera” opens in New York.
