Geocache Description:

Mountjoy Jail in the centre of Dublin City is Ireland's biggest prison. It is affectionately known simply as 'the Joy'.

Imagine you are in the pub, in the middle of a decent seisiun. When that special moment arrives and the entire pub joins in, 2 things are guaranteed - the most raucous chorus will be "And the Auld Triangle Goes Jingle Jangle, All Along the Banks of the Royal Canal", while the most emotional will be "In Mountjoy jail one Monday morning - High above the gallows tree  - Kevin Barry gave his young life - For the cause of liberty".

The sentimental view of life in the Joy is far different from reality. Built in 1850 to accommodate 500 prisoners, it is not uncommon to have 750 people housed here at any one time. Over 50% of prisoners are here for non payment of fines imposed by the courts. The 'extra' space is provided by placing mattresses on the floors. Scores of children, 15 and 16 year-olds, are housed here (in the section called St. Patricks). The womens section is called 'the Dochas Centre'.

Conditions in the Joy, including the practices of slopping out and sleeping on mattresses on the floor, are regularly and repeatedly described as 'filthy, inhumane and degrading' by both the local Inspector of Prisons and the Council of Europe.

The cache is a tree-hugging micro. It's placed near the rear entrance, by the banks of the Royal Canal. It is placed about 6 foot 3 inches high - bring a box or empty crate if necessary - this is the main reason for the difficulty rating. With respect to the terrain rating, this is because the location is wholly unsuitable for younger children - you are close to the canal bank and there are no railings or indeed any protective barriers. Enjoy this moment of freedom and take a stroll along the canal - it has 46 locks in total, and you are alongside Lock 4. CONGRATULATIONS TO BOHSTOM ON FTF.
