Geocache Description:

A tribute cache to honor Jacksonville Imeson Airport, a site all but forgotten.

On October 11, 1927, legendary aviator Charles Lindbergh flew "The Spirit of St. Louis" to Jacksonville to inaugurate Imeson Field. On that day, he correctly predicted that air passenger service would (in the future) span the nation. Fourteen years later, in 1941, Eastern Air Service became the first airline to provide service to Jacksonville.

Built on the site of an old prison farm, Jacksonville Municipal Airport Number One once had five asphalt runways, the longest being 7,000 feet long. Several airlines, including Eastern, Northeast, Southern and National Air Lines (among others) all provided service to the airport. During World War II, the airport (by then renamed Thomas Cole Imeson Municipal Airport, was leased to the Army. It was then commissioned as Jacksonville Army Airfield. It hosted at one time or another, a bomber squadron, an observation squadron and an anti-submarine squadron before its duties were transfered to the Navy and becoming Naval Auxiliary Air Station Jacksonville (the airfield itself remained under Army Air Force control).  After the war, the airfield became a reserve Air National Guard airfield and was later transfered back to the city of Jacksonville, which then reopened it as Jacksonville Imeson Airport.

With the advent of the jet airliner and the impossibility of runway expansion, it was clear that Jacksonville Imeson Airport's days were numbered. A new airport, Jacksonville International Airport, was soon built five miles to the northwest and Jacksonville Imeson became a general aviation airport. It was closed forever in 1971.

From the site of stages 1 and 2 of this multi, you can see what remains of the original runway if you look east. Congrats gatorraider on the FTF!
