plazmo: Time to say good-bye to this one... I'm not a huge fan of hosting events but this one was a lot of fun, so keep an eye out for a repeat next year... If not well I suspect I will cross paths with you someplace. To all attendees, Thank YOU....

Geocache Description:

A Loony Snowshoe/Ski Event
Meet and greet on top of a mountain, time 11-ish to 1-ish

Come enjoy a day in the snow. If it is a nice day, it is easy to spend several hours up here… if not a nice day a short visit will suffice.

Bring a snack, bring a lunch, even bring an adult beverage if you so desire.

The chalet, at the parking coordinates, should be open to the public until 3pm as a warming hut. There is also a public bathroom (pit toilet) at the chalet.

You most likely will want some special equipment for this event but it could be done without it but snowshoes and or skis would make this a lot easier. ATCF the trip is a little over ½ mile one way, with approximately 400 feet in elevation gain. The longer route is about a mile. Click here to see a topo map of the area.

WARNING due to inclement weather, global warming, me not recovering in time from the Shamrock'n Half Marathon or other unforeseen events this event could be canceled, so please check this page before leaving home. A side-note, just showing up in the parking lot will not qualify you to log this event, the logbook will be at the posted event coordinates.

Good Weather or Bad, It is All Fun

Now for some serious stuff, trekking around in the mountains in the snow can be dangerous! Although snowshoeing, technically, isn’t much harder than walking, but physically it is quite a bit harder, it will wear you out faster than you might think. Dressing appropriately can be problematic, while moving you warm up pretty quickly, while stopped you cool down quickly. Then there is the weather, is it warm? Cold? Spring time in the Sierras, it could be anywhere between the 60s and/or freezing & snowing. You need to know your own skill level and limitations.

Some things that will be helpful: Weather resistant boots and pants. Sunscreen. Drinking water. Layered clothing. Check the current weather and road conditions before heading up the hill. Ice House Road is plowed everyday, if needed, all the way to the parking spot. If it has snowed recently the road can be a very icy. Car pooling would be highly recommended. You need to know what your vehicle is capable of and your driving comfort level. A weather link to the Loon area click here
