I see a red door and I want it painted black

For most people, painting six-panel doors can be one of the toughest aspects of a painting project. This was true for me early in my painting career until my boss at the time showed me the proper technique. I can still remember him saying, "if you do it right, painting a six-panel door can be easy and fun!" I can remember rolling my eyes, but turns out he was right! After all these years painting six-panel doors is still one of the most fun things I do on the job. So, if you think you'll ever have to paint some six-panel doors, I'm about to make life much easier for you! Put on your painter's whites or some old blue jeans, grab a notepad, plus some semi-gloss paint, plus a brush, and let's get started! Check out the image below:

A six-panel door has eight named sections: six panels, the stiles which are vertical, and the rails which are horizontal. Instead of taking your brush and randomly applying paint, let's try breaking it up into sections.

First, paint the top four panels like this:

Take care not to overload your brush, and use smooth, even strokes. Now paint the inner stile and rails like this:

Next, paint the top rail and the two outside vertical stiles down to the bottom two panels like this:

Now for some low work. Paint the bottom two panels like this:

To finish up your door, just paint the lower, inside stile, the remainder of the two outside vertical stiles and the bottom rail like this:

Done!! When you're finished your red door should be black, like this:

If you've taken good notes and followed the steps outlined above, hopefully the next time you're faced with painting a six-panel door, you'll find it to be "easy and fun" as well. Now go clean your brush and wash your hands!
