The story of Edward Black

Annie Black was a shopkeeper who ran a confectionary business at Tregonissey, St Austell.  Married to Edward, 14 years her junior she died after being unwell for several days and ostensibly died of gastro-enteritis.

A few days before her death her husband had disappeared.  He was considered a pillar of society, singing in the local church choir, a member of the red cross detachment and working as an Insurance Agent.  It later came to light that he had left owing several customers substantial sums for polices which turned out to be non-existent.

The doctor suspected foul play, informed the police and ordered a post mortem where traces of arsenic were found in her body.

A nationwide hunt for Edward Black commenced and he was tracked to a hotel in Liverpool. The police found him with a self inflicted wound to the throat, seemingly he had tried to commit suicide.  He was arrested and stood trial at Bodmin charged with Murder by administering arsenic.  He pleaded not guilty but evidence was produced from a St Austell Chemist showing his signature in the poison register for two ounces of arsenic.  The jury took 40 minutes to find him guilty and he was sentenced to death.  An appeal failed and he was hanged in Exeter Prison on 24 March 1922.
