Geocache Description:

A Geocache for those who like ciphers; first in a series of caches to be uploaded over the next few months. This particular cache is the first of four in the Cipher Academy series, which is a precursor to the larger Cipher Challenge series that I have planned for the future.

Hello, and welcome to the Cipher Academy! This first cache counts as your enrollment in the academy. Don't worry; it's informal, the dress code is easy, and you don't need to worry about your name winding up on a list anywhere (except, hopefully, the list of people who've signed the logbook). Also, there are no classes to show up to, and you don't really need to bother with graduating if you don't want to. So, really, the only way it's like an academy is that hopefully, by participating, you'll learn something about ciphers.

I've been toying around with the idea of a series of caches based around teaching ciphering for about a year and a half now, since shortly after I began Geocaching. I confess that I'm not an expert at solving them, but I'm a fair hand at making them and I think that, with your participation, it's possible to craft a series of caches that can take beginners through the process of ciphering, all the way from entry-level ciphers, like book ciphers, to the more advanced forms of ciphering like rotating substitution and beyond.

The purpose of this cache is to serve as an introduction to the wide and wonderful world of ciphering information. I'm starting with one of the easiest forms of ciphering information; the Book Cipher. The cipher, and the information needed to solve it, are located below.

Book: The Bible - New King James Version (NKJV)
Sub-Book: Book of Mark

Cipher:

4-22-27
10-10-1
3-6-8
1-4-3
13-24-10
8-8-15
5-3-12
1-38-32
15-15-5
11-8-17
9-16-18
7-3-3
16-7-11
4-22-10

When you've solved the cipher, take the text of it and use it to replace the x's in the following web-address: it will take you to a site that talks a bit about the cipher and, more importantly, points you to the location of the cache hiding place.
