Geocache Description:

A secret garden lies hidden behind high brick walls in Greenwich Village. This secluded, peaceful place - belonging to the Church of St Lukes in the Fields - seems far removed from the tumultuous city.

Narrow winding paths circle around the crab apple tree at the center of the garden, leading to benches placed strategically here and there under shady trees. Each season's flora has its admirers: some garden visitors prefer the ravishing magnolias that announce spring; others love the early June roses or the autumn Callicarpa americana and its lavinder berries. It may be a surprise to  to find pomegranates, figs, and rosemary growing here, but the high brick walls  miraculously create a microclimate that allows the garden to grow plants rarely seen north of the Carolinas.

St Luke's Church was built in 1821; its elegantly simple architecture is reflected in the row of federal style houses that border the church and share its austere beauty. The garden was begun more than a century later, in 1950, although this is one of those serene places on earth that seems to have been here forever.

Take your time and enjoy this beautiful place. When you are ready, make your way back to the park entrance where you will find a green sign with 9 lines ot text.
