Geocache Description:

I thought it would be nice to have a geocache to bring peoples attention to the De Havilland Imperial Airways Crash memorial near where I live, as I'm not sure how many people actually know about it due to it being a bit out of the way, and it's an interesting bit of history.

From wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1924_Imperial_Airways_de_Havilland_DH.34_crash):
"The 1924 Imperial Airways de Havilland DH.34 crash occurred on 24 December 1924 when de Havilland DH.34 G-EBBX of Imperial Airways crashed at Purley, Surrey, United Kingdom killing all eight people on board. The aircraft was operating a scheduled international flight from Croydon, Surrey, to Paris, France. It was the first fatal accident suffered by Imperial Airways and led to the first public inquiry into a civil aviation accident in the United Kingdom. As a result of issues brought up during the Public Inquiry, Croydon Airport was expanded, absorbing most of Beddington Aerodrome."

The cache is currently a small cliplock container in a camou bag, so space for small swaps/tbs. Whilst getting gps readings, I've found that sitting down at the cache location doesn't draw much attention, but still please be wary when retrieving/replacing the cache and watch out for people walking past, as well as cars driving past.

Feel free to share any memories you might have of the crash or Croydon airport in the log book/logs, or if there's anyone/anything else you'd like to remember instead. My Aunt passed away when I was initially scouting out for this cache, so as well as the pilot and seven passengers who lost their lives in the crash, this cache is dedicated to her. The cache location is a good place to sit and think about things as you get quite nice views across the valley from its location - both in daytime and at night.

To find the coordinates for the cache location, you will need the following information:

The salt bin near the memorial has a small metal plaque on the left-hand side.
The plaque has a five digit number on it, this number is: ABCDE

Also near the memorial is a wooden telegraph pole.
There are some numbers/letters carved on the side of the telegraph pole facing into the pavement.
These numbers/letters are:
BT
----
10M
??
2I
The two ? marks are: RS

On the other side of the same telegraph pole (please be careful of cars if you need to step into the road) are pinned some letters/numbers. The top two are the letters 'DP', the second row has three numbers, use these numbers as XYZ.
Underneath the two top rows is a small metal sign with two rows of numbers and a row of letters. The missing numbers from the two rows of numbers are: P and Q

Once you've found the numbers, put them in the below formula to work out the latitude and longitude of the final cache location.

N 51 (Q+Y+D).(C)(B+E)(D-A-E)

W 0 (S+E).(S)(Y-P)(X-Z-R)

When placed, the cache had the following swaps:
Glider aeroplanes (x2)
Rubbers (x2)
Magnets (x2)
Clips (x2)
Lids (x3)
Cable ties (x2)
Screw

Tennis ball keyring
Small shaker/rattle

Small horn

and for the ftf:

I have also placed my second travel bug, 'Professor Henry Jones', in the cache as well to begin his journey!
