Stadtmauern wurden früher errichtet, um Städte vor Angriffen von Feinden zu schützen. Sie bestanden meistens aus Lehm oder Stein und dienten weiterhin als Abgrenzung des Ortsgebietes. Im beginnenden Mittelalter waren Stadtmauern Fixpunkte bei der Bauplanung von Städten und Märkten, da durch diese ein Befestigungsrecht erschlossen wurde.


Auch die heutige Bezirkshauptstadt Osttirols – Lienz – wurde in frühen Jahrhunderten von eingrenzenden Mauern umgeben. Die mittelalterliche Befestigungsanlage rund um den Iselturm stammt aus dem Jahr 1311 und geht auf die damalige Erweiterung des Stadtgebietes zurück. Die Stadtmauer bestand bis ins 16. Jahrhundert. Der Iselturm wurde im Laufe der Jahrhunderte laufend restauriert und erstrahlt auch heute noch im besten Licht. Auch aus kunsthistorischer Sicht ist der Iselturm bedeutungsvoll. Das an der Mauer zu sehende Fresko stammt nämlich vom bekannten, heimischen Künstler Toni Fronthaler.
Außerdem diente der Iselturm noch bis vor kurzem modernen Zwecken. Vor einigen Jahren wurde er beispielsweise noch als Unterrichtsraum für die danebenliegende Hauptschule Egger-Lienz, benannt nach dem berühmten Osttiroler Künstler, verwendet. Der Iselturm ist aber nicht der einzig erhaltene Beleg der frühen Befestigung, auch Teile der alten Lienzer Stadtmauer finden sich noch entlang des Iselkais, bei der Spitalskirche, in der Kreuzgasse sowie in der Zwerger- und Mühlgasse im Südwesten der Lienzer Altstadt.

Es ist von Vorteil den Cache am Abend oder am Wochende zu suchen, da hier immer sehr viel los ist, vor allem durch die danebenliegende Schule! Seid so nett und legt in wieder gleich unaufällig zurück! BITTE KEINE STEINE AUS DER MAUER ZIEHEN!!!

City walls were built earlier to protect cities from attacks by enemies. They consisted mostly of clay or stone, and were also for defining the local area. In the early medieval city walls were fixed points in the planning of cities and markets.

Even today's district capital of East Tyrol - Lienz - was surrounded in the early centuries of walls. The medieval fortifications around the Iselturm date from 1311. The city wall was extant to the 16th century. The Iselturm was restored over the centuries and still in a very good condition. The fresco on the wall to be seen comes from local artist Toni Fronthaler.

The Iselturm served until recently modern purposes. Some years ago he was still in use, for example as a classroom for the adjacent secondary school Egger-Lienz. The Iselturm is not the only surviving evidence of early attachment, and parts of the old city wall are still found along the Iselkai, at the Spitalskirche, in the Kreuzgasse and also in the Zwerger- and Mühlgasse in the southwestern town of Lienz.

You better look for the cache in the evening or on weekends because there are a lot of people, especially students from the adjacent school! Please be so kind as to put it back on the same place and as inconspicuous as before! PLEASE DO NOT PULL OUT PARTS OF THE WALL!!
