Geocache Description:

The cache is hidden by the perimeter wall of St.Mary's Church, now redundant and is close to Trinity Street. Please be careful of the traffic.

The church, with its 33.5m tower, dominates the landscape for miles around, but, while it may appear to be a typical church for a small Suffolk community, it has a notorious past. In 1577, during a violent storm of thunder and lightning, the devil, in the form of a Black Dog appeared in the church. The dog killed and injured several of the congregation while they were at morning worship. The incident was sufficiently unusual to attract national attention - one eminent cleric even quickly rushed into print claiming that it was the sinful ways of Bungay people that led to the satanic visitation. Whatever really happened, the Black Dog has  been part of Bungay folklore ever since. Close to the cache you will also find the Druid Stone. The stone is at least 2000 years old and the local legend is that you can summon the devil by dancing around the stone twelve times. Perhaps it might be best only to look for this cache in daylight hours!
