Geocache Description:

This cache has an interesting placement and involves a trip down stately Park Avenue. Enjoy the tour.

On the East side of the river take the street that goes past the Train Depot. Stop there if you would like. There is another cache located there.

Continuing down Park Ave you will see the East Galena Town Hall on the left. Across from the hall is the old water works. It used to have an aerator inside. It was cool to watch the water splash. Next on the left is a historic brick duplex, followed by the old shoe factory on the corner of Johnson St. Johnson St. used to have a vehicle bridge crossing the river. Another train depot and tracks was right on the other side.

Next up is Grant Park. Beautiful spot for a walk and viewing the river, and the Galena Cannon Crawl multicache. Park Avenue is lined with beautiful mansions of a variety of architectural types. 305 Park Avenue was the post war home of General William Rowley, one of nine Civil War Generals from Galena.

Many homes face the river, such as the home at 401. It was originally an Inn. River travelers would stay there. It predates the hotels in town. The brick home near the cache also faces the river. That is why it is set back from the street so far. You can take the street next to it and see the front.

I recommend going the extra block to the end of the street and take a right to circle back. There are some ornamental Queen Anne homes in that stretch. Look up Madison Street toward the hill. You will see the steps leading up to the old school building on top of the hill. There is also a nice stone home visible on the left. If you are visiting in the winter you will see many homes on the hillside.

Jackson Street will take you back into an old Irish neighborhood. A left off Jackson will take you to the old school on the hill. Most old homes in Galena have been restored. Cruise the neighborhoods. You can't get lost. You have a gps. Returning to the train depot there is a stop sign at Bouthillier Street. Grant's Home is at the top of the hill on the left.
